Learn to Drive an Automatic in our Mini Electric
The future will be electric cars and the future starts now. More and more cars are being made with electrified power trains, these may be a hybrid of petrol and electric or these may be fully electric. I find that fully electric cars give a much better driving experience and the Mini Cooper SE is one of the most fun to drive electric cars. It has lost none of the Mini charm in becoming electric. I am so pleased to have upgraded my Renault Zoe, which I have been teaching with for 18 months, for the fantastic Mini Cooper SE. This will be my third Mini in a row, the last two having manual gears. When driving around town, not having to think about the clutch and the gears makes driving much easier and much less stressful. With the electric powertrain, take the car out of town and you can have the driving excitement just the same and a petrol powered car. We are proud to have Lincolnshire’s first electric only driving instructor.

When you learn to drive in an electric car, you will be learning to drive any automatic car. We will not be surprised if you do not buy an electric car for your first car, but we will be surprised if you do not find fully electric cars better to drive. They are smoother and quieter. They respond in a very predictable manner as they do not need to swap from battery power to petrol power and back again like hybrid cars. By learning to drive in our fully electric car, you are prepared for the future and will be looking forward to buying your first electric car.
Range is not an Issue
I have been working as a driving instructor with the 22kWh Renault Zoe, with a real world expected range of 80 miles to a full charge. During driving lessons I am able to exceed this expectation. In Lincolnshire, we are behind a lot of the country when it comes to charging, yet I have 4 rapid chargers available to me. These will charge from 20% to 80% in around 20 minutes, just enough time for a snack and a coffee.
The Mini has almost 29kWh of available energy or an extra 35 miles of expected range. A typical day of driving lessons will require only 15 minutes on a rapid charger to see me finishing my days work with some spare energy. Plug in when I get home and the car will be fully charged by the morning. As a full time driving instructor, I cover over 25’000 miles per year. I have been doing this in a car with less than a 100 mile range. If I can do this, what range does an electric car really need?
