Getting Started

You will need to apply to the DVSA to be placed upto the register of approved driving instructors. You will need to submit a criminal records check to apply.

Part 1

Part 1 of the ADI qualification is a tougher theory test with more questions to answer and a higher number of correct answers needed. Pass this and a 2 year time limit begins.

Part 2

Part 2 of the ADI qualification is a tougher driving test. It lasts longer and is marked more harshly than the standard learner driving test. You only have 3 attempts at part 2, failing 3 times ends the qualification process

Part 3

Part 3 of the ADI qualification is your ability to teach. You will be observed giving a 1 hour driving lesson and how you enable learning and control risk will be assessed. You only have 3 attempts at part 2, failing 3 times ends the qualification process

Getting Started

Apply to become a driving instructor, Start the process to become an approved driving instructor (ADI) if you’re:

  1. applying for the first time
  2. reapplying after failing the qualifying tests
  3. reapplying after being an ADI before

Part 1 - The Theory Test

Part 1 will require you to study a variety of publications such as the highway code and know your road signs. You will also have questions on first aid and the responsibilities of an ADI.

We will provide you with access to theory test pro and enable the ADI theory test options for you. We will help you select to best publications to help you pass part 1.

Part 2 - The Driving Test

Part 2 will require you to shed all of your bad driving habits and learn the approved methods of driving again. You will be judged as a potential ADI and will be expected to drive to a high standard.

£30 per hour

Our senior driving instructor Mike is a Grade A driving instructor with over 12 years experience, Mike also holds a ROSPA advanced driving Silver and a ROSPA advanced riding Gold.

PDI - Trainee Licence

PDI Fee

After passing your part 2 AND after recording 40 hours of training, you can apply for the trainee driving instructors licence, often referred to as the pink badge. Being a PDI will allow you to offer paid for driving lessons, some of which will be supervised.

You can be a PDI for a period of 6 months to help you prepare for the part 3 test.

Part 3 - The Teaching Test

Part 3 will require you to demonstrate your ability to enable learning and manage risks. You will be observed whilst giving a driving lesson. How you enable the pupil to learn and understand will be marked. The choice of driving lesson and the location used for the lesson will be taken into consideration.
